Earth Day – Grand Opening Bike Tube Blowouts

Since today is the 40th Earth Day celebration, it’s a day when we should all reflect on what we can do to make the world a cleaner and greener place.  As a cyclist, you’re already off to a good start down the road to environmental sustainability, especially if you ride your bike to run errands or commute to work.  You can check out our Earth Day page to see green facts about the positive impact that riding your bike makes in terms of reducing pollution, plus read about initiatives that we are undertaking in our stores and here at our headquarters to reduce our corporate environmental impact.

But we identified one specific area where we can make a real difference, with your help,  by reducing waste through re-using & recycling one thing that all cyclists end up with plenty of… blown-out inner tubes!

We are teaming up with the nation’s leading tire recycler, Liberty Tire Recycling, to encourage cyclists and bike enthusiasts to recycle their used bike inner tubes.  In our pilot program this spring, we are launching the “Bike Tube Blowout,” a bike tube recycling program that will run during the grand openings of 12 Performance retail stores beginning in April.

During these grand openings, anyone can bring in their old bike inner tubes to one of our new stores and receive up to three $5 money cards for each tube they recycle, good for new bike inner tubes or any other merchandise (so it literally pays to recycle!)

We estimate that a major city can generate several tons of used rubber just from blown out bicycle inner tubes alone, and it usually ends up in landfills.  The bike tubes will be collected by Liberty Tire Recycling, the nation’s largest collector of used and scrap tires, and reused in creating athletic fields, railroad ties and weightlifting plates, among other applications.  Our aim is to make bike inner tubes a proven reusable resource for manufacturing and other applications, from rubberized asphalt for the nation’s highways to rubber mulch for playgrounds and parks.

And so far we are off to a great start, as we collected 360 lbs of tubes in Santa Rosa, CA during their Grand Opening 1st weekend:

And we are still counting up the haul from our newest store in Indianapolis, IN, but we think the tally there will be just as good!  Thanks to all of you that helped out by dropping by these Grand Openings, and dropping off your used tubes:

In addition to our 2 newest stores, Performance Bicycle and Liberty Tire will host “Bike Tube Blowout” collection drives during the grand openings of stores in the following locations:

* Oxnard, CA

* Woodland Hills, CA

* Raleigh, NC

* Columbia, MD (Washington, D.C.)

* Tualatin, OR (Portland)

* Santa Monica, CA

* Allentown, PA

* Pittsburgh, PA

* Tukwila, WA (Seattle)

* Lombard, IL (Chicago)

We are excited about what we have been able to achieve so far with this program, and we hope to expand it in the months to come.  With your help we can make a real impact and do our part to make every day Earth Day.

    Recycling the old tubes is a GREAT idea. I’m really glad to hear it. Maybe a volunteer program could be started in all the stores for customers to drop off their old tubes, even if not for any coupons, just to help out the environment.
