Spoke ‘n Revolutions Youth Cycling

Recently a few of us from our corporate HQ had the pleasure of meeting a group of high school students that have big plans for the summer, and a bright future ahead of them.  The students of Spoke ‘n Revolutions Youth Cycling club, from right here in our home town of Chapel Hill, NC, have as their goal to be a “youth focused cycling group that re-introduces student-cyclists to the joys of an active life by having their own cycling adventure.”

And what an adventure they have in store, as they head out on an 1800 mile ride from Mobile, AL, to Niagara Falls, NY, along the Underground Railroad Trail, which follows the route that many enslaved people used to escape to freedom. There’s no doubt that the students who complete this ride will be deeply affected by the things they see and learn during their trek, along with the sense of accomplishment of completing their journey under their own pedal power!

But this trip is really the culmination of almost 2 years of effort, as this group of students, who began their Spoke ‘n Revolutions training as sophomores, actually built their own bikes through working with The ReCYCLEry, NC, a 501c3 bicycle coop. The students earned their used bikes by repairing bikes donated to the ReCYCLEry; learning good bike mechanic skills was the first step along the successful path to confident riding, although they’ve also put in plenty of long hours in the saddle getting ready for this ride of a lifetime!

We met up with this talented group of students, along with the group’s co-founders Kevin and Suepinda, in our Chapel Hill, NC, store, and presented each rider with Performance jerseys, shorts and gloves, so they ‘ll good and feel comfortable during their long days in the saddle. There’s a great article about the team’s visit to our store in the local Herald-Sun newspaper, where our own Gaynor Collestor, the head of our Spin Doctor Product Technical Support team, summed up our feelings the best: “We are all incredibly proud, not of what you’re going to do, but what you’ve already done.”

We hope you’ll join us in wishing the students and support team of Spoke ‘n Revolutions the best of luck and safe travels on their adventure, which is scheduled to start next week! They’re going to have many stories to tell from along the road, and we hope to share some with you right here on our blog, so stay tuned for updates as the student cyclists begin their journey!

2011 stores

Even though the first month of the new year is somehow already drawing to a close, we thought that we’d mention one more thing that we’re looking forward to in 2011.  So far we’ve talked about our new 2011 bikes, a new season of pro racing, and just getting out to ride with our friends, but another big thing for 2011 is definitely our new stores opening soon!

We’re going to continue to grow and reach cyclists around the country with our new, cutting-edge store design, as well as with our legendary service, values and selection. We’ll update you about store opening and grand opening dates and information as soon as we finalize the details, but for now we can say that we’ll soon have new stores in the following locations this spring:

We’re excited about the opportunities to meet new cyclists and service the needs of new cycling communities, and to reach out to current friends with a more convenient location.  We look forward to sharing our passion for cycling in our new stores, while always providing our high level of customer service with our fantastic values and selection, our low price promise, and our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

If you are interested in joining our team, we are also accepting applications from friendly and knowledgeable people to work in our new stores! We’re always looking for cycling-knowledgeable associates to sell the joy of cycling and provide our customers with an exceptional experience.  Check out the Job Opportunities page on our site, or just follow the directions on the new stores opening soon pages.

Check back in the coming weeks for more updates and details about the new stores listed above and to see what additional new stores we’ve got planned for the rest of 2011!

Holiday Food Drive Wrap-Up

As you may recall from right before the busy holiday season, all 94 Performance stores served as receiving centers for food donations for an array of local food banks.  Our stores accepted a variety of non-perishable food items, including any kind of canned food or pasta, and dry foods such as cereal and rice that were sealed and packaged.

This was our second consecutive year with a holiday food drive, and our goal was the same–to collect as much food as we possibly could.  These donations of non-perishable food items really make a difference for those in need, especially during this time of year, and by partnering with local food banks these food donations go directly back to the communities that we are a part of.

Last year, with the help of everyone who donated, we collected nearly three tons of food.  But this year we really stepped up our efforts and are proud to announce that we collected a total of 16,890 lbs of food! That’s nearly 8 1/2 tons of food, all from fellow cyclists like you!

So we say thank you to everyone who was able to bring in a non-perishable food donation to one of our stores.  Your generosity will really make a difference in your community.

Holiday Food Drive

Starting today, all of our stores nationwide will accept canned goods and non-perishable food items to help stock local food banks.  We are once again working with local food banks across the country to provide much-needed food to struggling individuals and families this holiday season.

Between December 3 and December 17, all 94 Performance stores will serve as receiving centers for food donations, which will be distributed by local food banks.  Our stores will accept a variety of non-perishable food items, including any kind of canned food or pasta, and dry foods such as cereal and rice that are sealed and packaged.

Last holiday season we collected nearly three tons of food, and we hope to surpass that goal this year!  Our goal is to collect as much food as we possibly can.  As a thank you to those who are able to help, if you donate three or more non-perishable food items you will receive 10% off your entire in-store purchase with your donation.

Thanks in advance to all of you who are able to donate to our food drive during this busy holiday season.  Together we can really make a difference for those in need.

Grand Opening Bike Tube Blowouts

Since today is America Recycles Day, we thought it was the perfect time to give an update on our Grand Opening Bike Tube Blow-outs.  During the Grand Openings of our new and remodeled stores this year, we partnered with Liberty Tire Recycling, the largest scrap tire recycler in the country, on a recycling program for used or blown-out inner tubes. During the Grand Opening weekends, anyone could bring their used or blown-out inner tubes to the store and receive up to three $5 money cards for the tubes they recycled.

Liberty Tire Recycling, the nation’s largest collector of used and scrap tires, will turn the bike tubes into mulch for playgrounds, athletic fields, railroad ties and highway asphalt, among other uses. The company collects and recycles nearly one-third of all of America’s annual scrap tire material and has cleaned up more than 150 dump sites littered with nearly 40 million scrap tires—more than any other organization.

So how did we do?  It turns out you had a lot of used or blown-out tubes that you wanted to keep out of the landfill!  We collected a total of 2 tons of tubes during our Grand Opening celebrations.  If you’re having trouble picturing how much 2 tons is, just take a look at this 2-ton hippo that escaped from a private zoo in Montenegro!

Thanks to everyone for helping out with our Bike Tube Blow-outs–it just goes to show that when we all work together we can really make a difference.  And keep an eye on performancebike.com next year, or follow us on Twitter or Facebook, for news about more exciting bicycle-related recycling projects.

Hotter ‘N Hell 2010

The Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred is one of the oldest and largest cycling events in the nation, held each year in Wichita Falls, Texas. Riders and racers come from virtually every state and several foreign countries. This year they had another record-setting ride with 13,067 participants lining up for the 29th 100 mile Endurance Ride on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010 (see the picture below to see what that many cyclists look like on a start line!)

Photo from Torin Halsey/Times Record News

But more than just the Endurance Ride happen during the Hotter ‘N Hell weekend, as there is also a Consumer Show, Spaghetti Dinner, USA Cycling Criterium Race, USA Cycling Road Race, the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred Endurance Ride, an Off-Road bicycle race, off-road trail run, plus entertainment, food and fellowship at the Finish Line Village.  The local Wichita Falls newspaper, the Times Record News, has a great photo gallery of all the weekend’s festivities, plus a video of the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred experience.

Now of course it takes an army of volunteers to help the cyclists face the wind and heat out on the roads (and trails), so we here at Performance Bicycle were more than happy to send out a crew (from some of our 8 stores in Texas) to the Hotter ‘N Hell Finish Line village and to 2 rest areas along the route.  They had a great time (as they always do) meeting, greeting, and otherwise helping people out at our hospitality tent.

We also kept riders hydrated at our hydration station, and entertained & informed guests during our hourly giveaways.

We fine-tuned and provided on-the-spot repairs for those last minute rider needs.

Our guys also surprised guests with free swag bags with water bottles, Power Bar nutrition products, and $5 discount cards.

We registered several hundred guests for peopleforbikes.org and for our free bicycle giveaway.

And provided on site repairs at 2 rest areas – #16 on the 25 mile route and the infamous Hell’s Gates rest area.

All in all, it was another great Hotter ‘N Hell weekend (even if the temperature didn’t quite live up to the name, not that anyone is complaining).  Maybe next year we’ll see you out there on the road!
