Wheels 4 Life – A Hans & Carmen Rey Charity + Performance Bicycle

wheels_4_life_new_logoWe’ve partnered with the Wheels 4 Life charity of mountain bike legend Hans Rey and his wife Carmen for a few years now, and we’re excited to be able to share some of the results. Wheels 4 Life is a non-profit charity that provides free bicycles for people in need of transportation in developing countries. They partner with local individuals, organizations and other groups to help identify persons who sincerely need a bike to be able to go to school or to work. Find out more about upcoming projects and how you can help on http://www.wheels4life.org/ – but we’ll let Hans himself tell you why this work is so important, in this video from Interbike last year:

Our main avenue of supporting the mission of  Wheels 4 Life is by the Wheels 4 Life branded GT bikes that we offer on our site & in our stores. A portion of the cost of each bike goes directly to Wheels 4 Life and helps fund their many projects around the globe – so far over 170 bikes have been purchased in Africa with these funds, bicycles that will make a difference for entire families and communities in real and lasting ways.

We’ll let Carmen Rey tell you more about the projects that were funded by our Wheels 4 Life branded GT bikes, and how they are making a difference already:

The amount raised through the Wheels 4 Life bicycles sold by Performance enabled us to purchase 170 bicycles for people in really great need of transportation in Uganda. We funded 3 different projects thanks to you and your support of the work we are doing.

The first was implemented in February 2012. This was the Kyatiri Health Centre Project and saw us donate 25 bicycles to the health care center. They then went on to distribute them to their patients so that they would be able to travel to the health clinic faster and easier. These patients live in remote areas and have to travel quite a distance in order to see a nurse who can administer their treatments.

Our Wheels 4 Life Ugandan Ambassador, Mr. Jude Muleke, has managed the second project. He heads a registered CBO known as CBIRD for short. Jude has received funding for bicycles from us several times in the past and also assists us with the running of our various projects in Uganda.

The third and final project was with Voluntary Effort for Community Health (VECH Uganda). This is the first time that we have worked with VECH and we have been pleased with the way that they have administered their Wheels 4 Life project. With both CBIRD and VECH the bicycles went to various groups in our target area: school children, farmers, and people in need of transportation in order to work.

We always purchase the bicycles used in our projects in the area where they will be distributed, in order to aid the local economy, to save on transportation costs, and to make sure that spare parts are easily available.

Thank you so much for changing so many lives through the gift of bicycles. One bike helps change the life of approximately 4 people’s lives – not just the one person who originally receives the bike, but also their neighbors and family with whom the bike is shared.

Interbike 2012 Wrap-up: Part 1

Every year, the North American cycling world gathers in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the annual Interbike trade show. This year we were there to check out the latest gear and cycling trends, and these are a few of the most interesting things we saw. Check out our photo album on Facebook for even more shots from the show.

SRAM: the Chicago-based drivetrain experts had a huge booth and tons of new gear on display. On the mountain bike side, we were excited to check out the new XX1 system in person. Designed around 1 chainring in front:

And a whopping 11 speeds in the rear cassette, new XX1 promises to be a simpler, more durable and lighter setup for a range of riders:

And for those that are nostalgic for SRAM’s first product, there is also the return of GripShift, this time with high-end and smooth turning ball bearing internals:

On the road side, SRAM has expanded their lineup of WiFli extended range gearing to include SRAM Red, Force and Apex groups – with up to 11-32 cassettes, these 2×10 systems actually offer a wider range of gearing than most triple setups:

Shimano: Not to be outdone by their American rivals, Shimano was busy showing off their updated top-of-the-line Dura-Ace 9000 series road group. Beyond refinements to the clean aesthetics, the big news is that Dura-Ace now goes to 11 speeds in the back:

Other updates include improved ergonomics on the STI shifters, dual-bolt brakes, and a lengthened lever arm on the front derailleur:

Another interesting change, from both a design and practicality standpoint, is the new 4-arm crankset, which allows for the use of compact or standard chainrings on the same spider:

Dura-Ace Di2 has also been tweaked, incorporating advances made with the Ultegra Di2 system that allow for a more compact and efficient design:

Shimano developments weren’t just for their high-end products, as the affordable SLX mountain bike drivetrain received an overhaul, including a brake upgrade to match the short-stroke Servo-Wave levers of pricier XT & XTR groups:

Keeping on the mountain bike front, there are also updates on the way for hydration packs. Camelbak has made changes to their 2013 packs with an improved NV ventilation system on their high volume packs, like the M.U.L.E. and H.A.W.G., while the brand new Volt packs feature a lumbar water reservoir that keeps the weight supported around your waist:

Osprey Packs also has updates on the way to their popular packs for 2013, with tweaks to their water bladders, shoulder straps and more, plus increased offerings in women’s specific designs:

We also ran into mountain bike legend Hans Rey in the hall at Interbike. Hans is marking his 25 years of riding GT bikes with his hardcover coffee table book, “A Life of Mountain Bike Adventures” – just in time for holiday gift season:

Dreambikes Wrap-Up

If you haven’t been paying attention this past month, or if you’ve just stumbled across our blog recently, we’ve been talking up the dreambikes auction quite a bit. Sunday, December 19 marked the end of the last auction, so we thought we’d take a moment to give you the highlights.

For those of you just tuning in, the dreambikes program was started by crankbrothers to help benefit Hans Rey’s charity, Wheels4Life. They partnered with premiere frame builders Ibis, Titus, Focus and Tomac, and component and accessories makers SRAM, Rock Shox, Avid, Fi’zi:k and Continental Tires to create a stable of ten impeccably equipped, one-of-a-kind dream bikes that were displayed at cycling events across the western U.S. and Europe.

With the help of Performance Bicycle, crankbrothers auctioned off each of the dreambikes over the past five weeks. By the close of the final auction on Sunday, December 19, the dreambikes project had raised a total of $35,546 for Wheels4Life. Those proceeds will enable Wheels4Life to improve the lives of hundreds of people around the world who desperately need a bike for getting to work, school or accessing/providing health care.

Thanks to all of you who participated in the dreambikes auction. Your generosity is truly an inspiration to us, and Performance Bicycle is proud to contribute to a program that improves the world through the culture of cycling.

For those of you who want to make a difference but didn’t take part in the auctions, don’t worry, there’s still time to help. Right now we’re selling the 2010 GT Wheels4Life Trekking Bike—and donating a portion of the proceeds of these limited-edition GTs to Wheels4Life.

If you’re in the market for a comfortable hybrid, this is the bike to buy if you’d like to help Hans Rey and Wheels4Life carry on their mission of providing low-cost bikes to people in the developing world. You can also donate $10 by texting ‘WHEELS’ to 85944. Don’t forget to reply ‘YES’ to confirm (USA only).

dreambikes auction #3: Focus Project 2.0 & Ibis Mojo

Another week, another dreambikes auction, and another chance to bid on a pair of amazing mountain bikes from the team at crankbrothers! So far, we have raised an amazing $15,402… and that’s just from the first 4 bikes!

The best part about the dreambikes auction is that while you are bidding on the mountain bike of your dreams, you will also be supporting Hans Rey’s Wheels4Life charity.  All of the proceeds from the dreambikes auction go straight to Wheels4Life, a non-profit organization that provides bikes for people in developing countries, working directly with communities and individuals who desperately need bikes to provide transportation to get to school, to work, or to provide health care to patients in remote locations.

Hans Rey and his wife, Carmen, are both humbled by the success of the dreambikes program, and Carmen would like to personally thank the auction winners: “Thanks to the generosity of our four auction winners, Wheels4Life is able to get 100 children to school in Uganda, thus giving them an education and a chance of a much better life and 60 healthcare workers out into the field saving lives. That is a pretty amazing achievement. Together we are creating a difference through the gift of a bicycle and we could not do it without incredible people like Christiano Samaro, Ryan Black, Eric Vensel and Jon Martens. On behalf of those children, the nurses and Wheels4Life, we thank you.”

To create the dreambikes, Crankbrothers partnered with premiere frame builders Ibis, Titus, Focus and Tomac, and component and accessories makers SRAMRock ShoxAvidFizik and Continental Tires to create a stable of impeccably equipped, one-of-a-kind dream bikes that were displayed at cycling events across the western U.S. and Europe.
