Grand Opening Bike Tube Blowouts

Since today is America Recycles Day, we thought it was the perfect time to give an update on our Grand Opening Bike Tube Blow-outs.  During the Grand Openings of our new and remodeled stores this year, we partnered with Liberty Tire Recycling, the largest scrap tire recycler in the country, on a recycling program for used or blown-out inner tubes. During the Grand Opening weekends, anyone could bring their used or blown-out inner tubes to the store and receive up to three $5 money cards for the tubes they recycled.

Liberty Tire Recycling, the nation’s largest collector of used and scrap tires, will turn the bike tubes into mulch for playgrounds, athletic fields, railroad ties and highway asphalt, among other uses. The company collects and recycles nearly one-third of all of America’s annual scrap tire material and has cleaned up more than 150 dump sites littered with nearly 40 million scrap tires—more than any other organization.

So how did we do?  It turns out you had a lot of used or blown-out tubes that you wanted to keep out of the landfill!  We collected a total of 2 tons of tubes during our Grand Opening celebrations.  If you’re having trouble picturing how much 2 tons is, just take a look at this 2-ton hippo that escaped from a private zoo in Montenegro!

Thanks to everyone for helping out with our Bike Tube Blow-outs–it just goes to show that when we all work together we can really make a difference.  And keep an eye on performancebike.com next year, or follow us on Twitter or Facebook, for news about more exciting bicycle-related recycling projects.

Earth Day – Grand Opening Bike Tube Blowouts

Since today is the 40th Earth Day celebration, it’s a day when we should all reflect on what we can do to make the world a cleaner and greener place.  As a cyclist, you’re already off to a good start down the road to environmental sustainability, especially if you ride your bike to run errands or commute to work.  You can check out our Earth Day page to see green facts about the positive impact that riding your bike makes in terms of reducing pollution, plus read about initiatives that we are undertaking in our stores and here at our headquarters to reduce our corporate environmental impact.

But we identified one specific area where we can make a real difference, with your help,  by reducing waste through re-using & recycling one thing that all cyclists end up with plenty of… blown-out inner tubes!

We are teaming up with the nation’s leading tire recycler, Liberty Tire Recycling, to encourage cyclists and bike enthusiasts to recycle their used bike inner tubes.  In our pilot program this spring, we are launching the “Bike Tube Blowout,” a bike tube recycling program that will run during the grand openings of 12 Performance retail stores beginning in April.
